What Is Car Detailing?
Car detailing is a deep, detailed clean of a vehicle, inside and out, using hand-wash methods, specialist tools and the right products for each surface. The aim is to restore, protect and maintain your car’s condition, not just remove surface dirt the way a quick car wash does.
You’ll also see it called auto detailing or vehicle detailing. Same thing, different label.
A wash gets the dirt off. A detail goes over every surface by hand, uses a different product for fabric, leather, vinyl, glass and paint, and finishes with protection so the clean lasts.
What’s Included in a Full Detail?
A full detail covers every surface of your car inside and out: a hand wash, wheel cleaning, paint decontamination and protection on the outside, and deep cleaning of seats, carpets, dash, glass and door jambs on the inside. Ceramic coating, PPF and window tint are separate services.
Exterior
- Hand wash with a scratch-free foam bath
- Wheel and rim cleaning
- Deep paint cleaning to lift embedded grit, iron particles, tree sap and road tar
- Tyre and trim dressing
- Streak-free glass
- A hand wax or paint sealant finish to lock in the shine
Interior
- Steam cleaning of seats, carpets, floor mats and headliners
- Stain removal
- Leather cleaning and conditioning, and fabric treatment
- Dash and vinyl dressing
- Door jambs, which are the spot most quick cleans skip
We cover each interior step in our interior detailing guide.
Quoted as add-ons: engine bay cleaning, headlight restoration and odour removal.
Separate services, not part of a standard detail:
- Ceramic coating for a hard, water-repelling layer on your paint
- Paint protection film (PPF) for stone chip and scratch protection
- Window tinting for heat, glare and privacy
- Paint correction for swirl marks and scratches beyond what a detail can fix
Car Detailing vs a Car Wash
A car wash removes surface dirt, usually in minutes. Car detailing cleans, restores and protects the whole vehicle by hand, inside and out, and takes several hours. A wash maintains the look between details; it doesn’t replace one. Think of a wash as a quick tidy and a detail as a proper reset for your paint and cabin.
| Car wash | Car detailing | |
| Main goal | Remove surface dirt | Clean, restore and protect |
| Method | Often automatic brushes or a quick rinse | Hand wash and decontamination |
| Paint | Leaves embedded contamination behind; strong detergents can strip wax | Lifts embedded contamination, then finishes with wax or sealant |
| Interior | A quick tidy at most | Deep clean of seats, carpets, dash, glass and door jambs |
| Time | Minutes | About 3 to 5 hours |
| Cost | Low | From $330 at M&N (hatch or sedan) |
| Best for | Dust between details | Restoring and protecting your car |
Brush washes can also leave swirl marks over time. We break that down in does an automatic car wash damage paint.
How Often Should You Detail Your Car?
Most cars benefit from a full detail every 4 to 6 months. If you only need the cabin refreshed, an interior detail every 6 to 12 months is usually enough, and sooner with kids, pets or regular meals in the car.
You’ll see both numbers around, because they cover different jobs. The paint takes the beating from Canberra’s sun and swings between dry heat and cold, so the exterior needs attention more often. A cabin that only sees commuting can go longer.
Waiting until you sell is the least useful time to detail. By then the grime is baked in, odours have set and leather has started to dry out. Regular detailing is cheaper than reversing the damage.
How Much Does Car Detailing Cost in Canberra?
A full detail at M&N Detailing starts from $330 for a hatch or sedan, $380 for a small SUV and $450 for a large SUV. Very dirty cars, red dirt, excessive pet hair, grass seeds and sand can attract extra charges.
| Vehicle | Full detail from |
| Hatch or sedan | $330 |
| Small SUV | $380 |
| Large SUV | $450 |
Ceramic coating and PPF are quoted after a free assessment, because paint condition and coverage change the job. The full breakdown is in our Canberra car detailing cost guide.
FAQ
Is car detailing worth it?
For most owners, yes. A detail protects your paint, keeps small problems from turning into big ones and helps the car hold its value when you sell. If all you need is dust off the paint before a meeting, a wash is fine. Detailing is for when you want the car looked after, not just looking clean.
How long does a detail take?
A full detail takes about 3 to 5 hours, depending on your vehicle’s size and condition. Heavily soiled cars take longer.
Do you detail the engine bay?
Yes, as an add-on. Engine bay cleaning isn’t part of the standard package, so we quote it based on what your car needs.
